Pep Guardiola: City Struggled With Long Balls, Second Balls In Loss

May 29, 2021 7:22 PM

Pep Guardiola said that Manchester City struggled with long balls and second balls during their 1-0 loss to Chelsea in the Champions League Final.

"It was a tight game and we had some chances, but against the defensive structure of Chelsea it is not easy," Guardiola said after the match.

"We struggled with long balls and second balls. In that moment you need the inspiration and quality, there were three or four moments that were close but didn't arrive.

Guardiola has not won a Champions League Final since 2011.

The City manager remained proud of his side's accomplishments this season.

"It was a tough season in the pandemic, but we learn from this for the future. I have incredible respect for the players, they gave everything, but we will come back stronger. I want to congratulate them for their exceptional season."

May 29, 2021 1:25 PM

Brentford earned a promotion to the Premier League for the first time in club history following their 2-0 win over Swansea City.

Brentford, who lost to Fulham in the playoffs last season, will earn around $240 million due to the promotion.

"We were the better side even when they had 11 men and they didn't create any chances. We fully deserved it. I'm in the Premier League with the best bunch of boys," said Ivan Toney, who scored a goal.

The club are owned by Matthew Benham, a former professional gambler known for using statistics to rebuild the side.

Toney is an example of the "Moneyball" strategy, arriving from Peterborough for $7 million to replace Ollie Watkins, whom Aston Villa bought for $46 million.

Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool In Champions League Is 'Massive Achievement'

May 23, 2021 5:26 PM

Jurgen Klopp praised the achievement of Liverpool making the Champions League on the final day of the season, with his side finishing in third place in the Premier League.

“This is big," said Klopp after Sunday's game. "If someone had told me five or six weeks ago that we would finish the season in third, I would have said it was impossible. It was absolutely out of reach. But the good thing this year is how we responded when we didn’t feel good because too many things happened to us."

Klopp would then praise Liverpool's centerback pairing of Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams for stabilizing the team.

“Today they [Williams and Phillips] both get cut and we had to fight through. How they played is absolutely incredible. The steps they made this year were on a different level. To fight through all this and finish third is the best lesson you could learn for life. From nowhere to the Champions League in five weeks is a massive achievement," said Klopp.

Klopp also confirmed that Gini Wijnaldum would leave the side on a free transfer this summer.
